Huckabee's Phone Call From God

This is religio-conservato-americana at its finest. The wedding of a certain understanding of Christianity with the Republican party(salvation comes on Air Force One) is very scary. We are doing things as the American Empire that are horribly unbibilical i.e. unjust wars, defense of torture, big government spending on money we don't have, and causing all kinds of repurcussions around the world that are way away from the mandate of a Christian culture. This episode was terribly blasphemous. We live in the age of history that will be known as the American Empire...We ought to be more wary of how are Christianity is done... Not that mixing in politics is in anyway wrong, it is the WAY we do it. It is NOT by thinking and acting like God is someone that you can bend down to the ridiculously small god of Arminian, religio-family values no gospel kind of trinitarian heresy!

The implications of Christmas

Merry Christmas!

This is the time of the year that all Christians (generally) become victorious, celebratory, and robust in their demonstrations of beauty and giving. We sing "Joy to the World!" and we become basically Postmillennial Christians for just one little time span of the year. Oh for the day when all Christians will be as confident in the Lordship of our Savior over all aspects of life everywhere. When Sabbath living will be the most joyful, restful, and truly delightful day of the week. The rest of the year, unfortunately, Christians exude a literal theology of defeat.. Let's just let the world go to pot because we are going to be raptured out of here...Instead of a more biblical theology which (because of the incarnation of Christ) the Creator turns towards remaking and renewing this creation. Because of Christ, we live in this world, we are to remake the spoiled creation around us and plant ourselves here.... We are to think about planting trees (children) and nurturing them for a thousand generations.. Until, The New Heavens and the New Earth are complete here and everywhere in space--"No more let sins and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make His blessings flow Far as the curse is found, Far as the curse is found, Far as, far as the curse is found..!!!! Let Heaven and nature sing! Rocks, hills, plains, animals and the creation sings for joy-Rom 8... May His Kingdom come on earth as it is in Heaven. Christians were never evac-ed through history.. We win! Why would God get the greatest of glory if MOST people went to Hell? No, search the Scriptures and see, all the nations will bow before Him, and every tongue confess.. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry. The government of the world will be on Him. All authority has been given to Him, He will not give His glory to another!
He reigns! This is what Jesus is Lord means!

The inescapable covenant realities of life

Here are two pictures in support of demonstrating that covenant theology is Hebraic, and thus the most biblical way to view theology and the world:

Marriage--marriage is one of the last covenant rituals that the culture still practices...Think about it..Two individuals say a few words to eachother and someone else says a few words at them, and then blammo! We have two covenant bound, and deeply connected people before God in which it would take a major upheavel ( to the Bible's definition) to divorce them. Consummating the marriage is the complete act that seals the deal.

Sex--You cannot shake an illicit fornication (pornea in the Greek). You can't, as the movie (devil wears prada) lies and suggests, become one with a woman and then think you can go on your merry way. What is this one connection? Have you ever found that odd? "Well sure, it's intimate alright, but what makes you one with that person not just in the act but in the covenant type connection you end up having with that person for the rest of your life. It's a mystery, but then so is marriage, and so is the relationship with Christ and the Church--Eph. 5

Devil wears Prada

Jana and I saw Devil wears yadda, yadda, last night and it was great to see someone tear down (a little) the corrupt and narcissistic culture that industry (fashion and body worshippers) pushes out. Of course, Hollywood is not willing to even touch their main "Ashera" idol, and that is the human "right" of illicit sex--live in boyfriend, and the night with the male prostitute. But, there were lots of shots against the fashion industry...Speaking of which, I was shopping for my beloved the other day, and I wanted to get a simple headband type of thing, and they wanted $135 dollars for this thing, 1/16 of a dress!! Nordstrom's it was...

Tom Schreiner on Romans, thoughts

"What the law could not produce was obedience to the will of God. Both Jeremiah and Ezekiel predicted a day when God would grant his people the ability to keep the law. The imprint of teaching to which believers are delivered fulfills this promise; they obey from the heart because of the transforming work of God." But it wasn't just the ability to keep the law, they had the ability to be sure..And nor is it that now we have the ability to keep the law exactly like an Israelite should have. Rather, the enabling of the Holy Spirit and the New Covenant would drastically and joyously reverse the major trend of apostasy in the Old Covenant. The effect and promise of the Christ is far deeper and richer in the hearts of the Israel of God now. It is more along the lines that in the Old Aeon we had lots of privileges and blessings, but many shadows; Now, we have a superabundance of power, graces, gifts, and wisdom, knowledge, etc., We need to think of the transition from the old creation to the new creation more in this way, not bifurcating the two or throwing one out i.e. the treasure of Torah (be honest-it leads to fuzzy and vague antinomianism) but seeing it as from good to great.

Old Covenant/New Covenant

To be under law, partly meant that they did not have the power to keep the moral norms of the law. But then, do we take up the dominion we have over the norms of sin to regularly and faithfully keep the law (defined as God's character)?

Amazon.com: Your Wish List: http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/1TELOXBDPA14J

This is my mother load wish list... Hey, if you buy me a book, then send my your list, and I'll buy you one--sort of like matching donations..

Planet Earth and Man vs. Wild

Two shows that have been absolutely amazing on the Discovery Channel are "Man vs. Wild" and Plant Earth. I know that you can get Planet Earth at least, on DVD at Costco, it is truly devotional. Amazing photography in amazing places. Some creatures have been filmed that have very likely never been seen. Caves, deep ocean, and extremely hard to get shots of crocs grabbing their lunch and such are filmed. It truly is God-glorifying inspite of nothing said about God specifically by mouth.
"Man vs. Wild" is alot of fun. Some Christian guy (actually) who goes around to treacherous and inhospitable places and showes survival techniques. The best part is literally watching him eat raw insects and dead camels, including one episode where he ate goat testicles-truly disgusting.

Check 'em out

Romans

Well, I am reading right now Schreiner's 818 page commentary on Romans. I have appreciated how much he interacts with the "New Perspective on Paul." He has some great things to say. He is limited in that he is a Reformed Baptist, but I have enjoyed the commentary quite a bit. It is some pretty tough slogging, because it is so interactive with the Greek and Greek syntax, but that is good too. Baker exegetical commentary series I think is the name of the series.

In praise of this "dumbed down" modern writer

Boring, dry, tedious, long, wordy, mostly unhelpful books are a sin......

There, I said it... Ahh! You say, it all depends on the evaluation of the person who is reading it but....

If it is a book on theology, and thus about Jesus, then yep', I stand by my words...

And so, in praise of modern evangelicalism and the more modern style of writing, I herald forth that it is a good thing to write fewer words in plain language....

Therefore, I speak in praise of N.T. Wright's book, "The Resurrection of the Son of God." Though it is 738 pp's, I rub my weary eyes with joy to read this great modern evangelical for his superb learning, his plain language, his feeding me content with interest, and most of all for his not making deep scholarship a bore!! Hooray, for this fine Englishmen!

Gregory of Nazianzus 330-391

This I give you to share, and to defend all your life, the one Godhead and power, found in the three in unity, and comprising the three separately; not unequal, in substances or natures, neither increased nor diminished by superiorities or inferiorities; in every respect equal, in every respect the same; just as the beauty and the greatness of the heavens is one; the infinite conjunction of three infinite ones, each God when considered in himself; as the Father, so the Son; as the Son, so the Holy Spirit; the three one God when contemplated together; each God because consubstantial; one God because of the monarchia. No sooner do I conceive of the one than I am illumined by the splendour of the three; no sooner do I distinguish them than I am carried back to the one. When I think of any one of the three I think of him as the whole, and my eyes are filled, and the greater part of what I am thinking escapes me. I cannot grasp the greatness of that one so as to attribute a greater greatness to the rest. When I contemplate the three together, I see but one torch, and cannot divide or measure out the undivided light.

Amen and Amen!

This is my blog!!

Okay, I don't feel like spending 45 min's trying to change the fact that it says "posted by Jana Alexander" at the very end of all my posts, but my lovely wife used our same e-mail address for her great blog--flowerofgrass.blogspot.com and somehow all my posts say they were posted by her so, it is actually me.
Well, I haven't posted in an age..But, here I am alone in the wilderness posting what no one will read but me. But, journals are a good thing right? We moved to Spokane, if anyone is reading this. The first few days I went through major withdrawals from Moscow..One gets very attached to Moscow. I esp. did because I drank up to the dregs the community in Moscow because I really love people, or I really try. I went from living in the smallest town I've ever lived in to the most urban setting here. It is way different here, but we are enjoying our new world. We went hiking up around the mountains in Cor De' Alene to chop down a Christmas tree and that was a lot of fun as we were with some of the other families from the church. The mountain ranges above us were sprinkled with snow, it very much looked like powdered sugar.
My first week at the office was great, I am really liking the new job. I am reading a book called "The Holy Trinity in Scripture, History, Theology, and Worship." It is fantastic. It is a meaty book , but the chapter lengths are reasonable and well summarized. The author, Robert Letham, especially draws out the lessons we can learn from the Eastern Church and where we can grow here in the West. Did you know that in Eastern Orthodoxy, you can't have communion? There you go, they are closed communion. That, my friend, is a departure from justification by faith. They also bow down like Muslims, and love icons upon icons. However, at least they pay attention to the Holy Trinity all-the-time in their worship and probably their lives to some extent. More later,
Peace

The grace of God is amazing, Jana did great! Oh, and she made the little blanket to the right.
I think the kids will keep her!
Beautiful time of year to be around Moscow. Actually, this is the Shire. Bilbo took the pic for us, and as you can see, he is right at their level!

She is healthy and as you can see the shoulder there, she partook in eating with us of the fat and the sweet.

Abby, quite thrilled!

Covenant children

A surfing contest at "the lane."

a Prayer,

Our triumphant King and risen Lord Jesus, This is the day that you have made, we rejoice and are glad in it. We thank you heartily for the solid meat of real food, of real worship, and good theology. We praise you for weather, for all the kinds of weather you give us. We have tasted of some of the best of food, we have heard of the sweetest of sounds, smelled the most succulent of aromas, and have felt of the glory of what another person feels like who is made in your image. We thank you for all things earthy, for all things messy, we thank you for the windows of the souls of men in other’s eyes. We truly have eaten of the fat, and drunk of the sweet, and we do not desire to wax fat and kick as it was said of Jeshurun. We do not want the daughter of our prosperity to consume us and make our physical and spiritual eyes bulge with fatness and laziness. We are profoundly thankful, desire to be content to the bone with our monotony, and mundane matters, not despising the longsuffering and forbearance that you show us which shows your goodness leading us to repentance. Thank you and praise you God for the blood, and the mud, the sweat, and the tears of your love for us and for our love in turn for you and for our brothers and sisters. Thank you Jesus for hard work. Fatigue, lined eyes, and for headaches. You are more important and others are more important than pain. Thank you for a clean conscience through repentance, what a gift, what -a -gift. For joy, laughter, a pure heart, and for holiness. For the body of Christ, the twirky personalities, the immaturity and struggle within us which through your providence drives us to You and drives us all to struggle with one another. Teach us to love, large hearts, open minds, flexible with others personalities and differences. Enlarge our respect for our brothers and sisters, give mutual love and understanding. Wash away the filth of Saruman in us, the pettiness, anger, bitterness, envy, discontent, lust, and pride. Renew us, remake us, and break us down, so that we are remade into the true and real new Man, the Man Christ Jesus unto all things, our Head, our Praise.
Jesus’ name,
Amen

This is Peter Parker's bro, he is actually our son. He actually let us take a direct shot of him, he just saved a squirrel from getting run over before this shot... We are okay with his spider powers...You know, every now and then we have to reprimand him for throwing web balls at his friends who just took his toy, but hey, we're proud of him...

How much of the pure glory of God can you see in this little flower? How many people noticed just this one flower and gave thanks to the Father?

here we are on a road trip

Me, surfing at Cowell's beach which is one of the best places to take novices like me. The wet suit was amazing.. It was like Spidey man's black suit in his upcoming movie, and no I don't have any revenge towards anybody...The seams on the suit are liquid seams believe it or not, and it really keeps the water out.

This is actually a movie, but I don't know if it will work. I surfed/preached/and toured Santa Cruz, CA in Feb. and Jana and I are going back in April!!
