The Year of Living Biblically-A.J. Jacobs Part 1
"In the third century, the scholar Origen is said to have interpreted literally Matt. 19:12 'There are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven'-and castrated himself. Origen later became a preeminent theologian of his age-and an advocate of figurative interpretation."

Gospels
On John and the gospels..."We related the first chapter the last chapter and marvelled that the same Eternal Word which was with the Father in the Beginning had become the man Jesus whose name would fill the libraries of the universe... The genealogies prove Jesus to hail from the tribe of Judah; yet he is without father or genealogy. The sayings prove him to be a genius; yet he gives back his genius for the comprehensive Spirit of the Church. The miracles prove him to be a cosmic force; yet, this cosmic force does not dominate but serves. And the prophecies prove him to be the Fruit of the Lips of all the peoples of the world; yet he is a person, a man in space and time, the personal friend of John."

Doug Wilson, in his introduction to Galatians from Omnibus Textbook
"Our society fruitlessly craves another gospel; any other gospel will do, except the real one. We will drink ten glasses of water an hour, meditate while water cascades down the plastic waterfall beside our pet rock. We will hum a mantra. We will invest money in businesses in parallel universes. We will make pilgrimages to Tibetan villages. Anything, except submit."

Comments on John
The prayer for all of us should be that Christ would disclose himself to us. This should be our greatest desire throughout our lives:
John 14:21 "He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him."
How does He? When we love to keep His commands. It reminds me of Ps. 25:14, "The secret of the LORD is for those who fear Him, And He will make them know His covenant."
If we want to know the secret of God's covenant and to really know the Lord Jesus, we must abide in Him through keeping His commands. Jesus said, .."So that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded Me."
As the Son delighted to obey His Father and was vindicated so must we.
"You are My friends if you do what I command you." This is our food.
